cyclenation Guide to Cycle Campaigning
1. Structure of cycle campaigning
The leaders of any cycle campaign need an understanding of where the campaign fits in with the broader cycling community. The following is a brief overview.
| UK Cycling Alliance | This is the umbrella group of which cyclenation is a founding member. Also includes CTC, Bicycle Association, Sustrans, and London Cycling Campaign. This organisation has a policy group to coordinate responses to things like legislation, and pays for a parliamentary worker to work one day a week with the all party cycling group. |
| Sustrans | Originally grew out of an affiliated Cycle Campaign Network group in Bristol, now one of the largest cycling organisations in the country with a network of offices, promoting a national cycle network. It runs a very wide range of projects from school cycling projects to individual travel planning projects for local authorities. It has a network of supporters |
| British Cycling | The governing body of sports cycling. |
| CTC | The main and largest cyclist organisation, with which cyclenation has strong links. Active members of both have over the years held key positions in both organisations. CTC carries out important work supporting and running national campaigns. |
| Bicycle Association | The main industry association |
| Association of Cycle Traders | The trade body for retailers. |
| Bike Hub | An industry coalition which collects funds for cycling projects through an industry levy. |
| Cycling England | The government delivery agency which administers a large number of projects in England. In particular, Cycling England is in charge of the cycle demonstration town programme. |
| Bike Week | The annual promotional week for cycling re-launched by the Cycle Campaign Network in the early 1980s but now a wide coalition including the cycle industry and the main cycling organisations plus Travelwise(Association of Commuter Transport). This is funded from all the UK governments plus funds from Bike Hub, and currently managed by reps from cyclenation, Bicycle Association and Sustrans. |
